SVSU's role in Kochville questioned by residents
October 31, 2005 —
Several residents questioned the role of SVSU administrators and students in the decision-making process at the Tuesday, Oct. 18 Kochville Township Board of Trustees meeting.
Several residents echoed a shared theme that it is the place of Township residents - not individuals related solely to the Township through SVSU - at Board meetings. One resident felt that SVSU students were given too much time to speak at the last meeting, since residents were warned about the time limit and cut off.Residents also inquired the Board about the wisdom of voting on a topic that was discussed by residents earlier in the meeting. Stephen J. Yanca, SVSU professor of social work, was irritated that residents' questions to the Board were not being answered.
"When do you answer to the people of the Township?" Yanca asked. Yanca said that he has asked the Board questions several times, and has not received an answer in writing, speech, or any form of communication.
In response, Kochville Township Supervisor Kenneth P. Bayne opined that the Board is not obligated to respond to public comment.
The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 7.30 p.m.
