Symposium to focus on Asia

A series of scholars will visit Saginaw Valley State University's Rhea Miller Recital Hall to discuss the politics, economy, and culture of south Asia during "International Symposium: South Asia."

The symposium opens Thursday, Feb. 3 with a lecture from Ayesha Jalal, professor of history at Tufts University at 1 pm. Her talk is titled "Bridging the Great Divide: Towards an India-Pakistan Détente."

According to a press release sent out by SVSU, Jalal is considered one of the world's leading scholars of modern south Asian history. She received her doctorate in history from the University of Cambridge.

The second speaker will be Arvid Panagariya, the Jagdish Bhagwati professor of Indian Political Economy and professor of economics at Columbia University.  His talk, "South Asia Economy: Can India be the Tiger that China Is?" will take place Thursday, Feb. 10 at 7 pm.

Panagariya is the author of many books, articles and technical papers, including "The Muddles over Outsourcing." He completed his doctorate in economics at Princeton University.

The series will conclude Thursday, Feb. 17 when visual anthropologist Tejaswini Ganti, associate professor of anthropology at Connecticut College, presents her lecture, "The Indian Film Industry: Bollywood and Globalization." She will speak at 2:30 pm.

Ganti received her doctorate from New York University.

The symposium is sponsored by the SVSU Office of Academic Affairs. 

Admission to all lectures is free of charge.
