The SVSU men's soccer took a hard 2-1 loss against Gannon on Sunday, Oct. 2, the Cardinals fourth in their last six games. The loss dropped SVSU to 2-2-8.

Gannon came in atop the GLIAC standings and fourth in the Great Lakes Regional Rankings, and extended their winning streak to nine games.

The Golden Knights used two late second half goals to get the victory on the road against the Cardinals.

After a scoreless first half, the Cardinals took a 1-0 lead with a goal at 48:33 on senior Jared Riepma's fourth goal of the season. Senior Eric Whelton assisted on the play.

The Cardinals, however, could not hold the lead as Gannon tallied their first goal at 61:10, and then Adam Maduri scored his seventh goal of the season with his game winner at 86:19.

It was a physical game, as there were 21 penalties called and seven yellow cards dished out. The Cardinals outshot the Golden Knights, 21-10, but there were unable to put more in the net against a stingy Gannon defense.

A day earlier, the Cardinals took on Mercyhurst College. The Cardinals and the Lakers played to a 0-0 double overtime tie.

Again, the Cardinals outshot the Lakers, 18-10, but could not find the net on the afternoon. The Cardinals' defense was also up to par, as they only allowed the Lakers one shot on goal, which was stopped by sophomore Eric Carnes. It was another physical game for the Cardinals, with 37 fouls during the game.

On Sept, 25, the Cardinals went down to Ashland, Ohio and were subject to the Eagles high-powered offense.

Ashland possesses the highest scoring team in the conference, and they lead in almost all other major offensive team categories.

Ashland scored two goals in the last seven minutes of play to defeat the Cardinals 2-1. Senior Cale Wasserman scored at 79:11 with an assist from Riepma to give the Cardinals the 1-0 lead.

The goal seemed to have struck a cord with the Eagles, as Elliot Bradbrook knotted the game winner with his team-leading sixth goal of the season. Five minutes later, Danny Slater scored on a breakaway for the win.

The Cardinals have now played every team in the conference at least once except for Northwood University, who they will play Friday in Midland.

Northwood will bring a 2-9-1 (1-3-1 GLIAC) record with them to the rivalry. The Timberwolves have a susceptible defense, as they have been outscored by opponents 23-7 this year.

Northwood does, however, have a few bright spots on offense starting with Art Nielson. Nielson, a freshman from Scotland, is tied for the team lead with two goals this year and was named GLIAC Player of the Week on Sept. 20.

Nielson has some help in senior Anthony Tuzzolino (two goals, five points) and junior Mladen Oroz (two goals, four points).

They still have only scored more than two goals once the entire year.

Following the Northwood game the Cardinals will be in action as they play host to Ashland and Findlay on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 22 and 23.
