Student urges political activity

Letter to the Editor

Okay, it is time for all 10,000 of us to take a stand when it comes to issues about our government.

About three weeks ago I went to the Constitution Day event and was disappointed to see the lack of students at that event. A couple nights before that, there was a peace vigil for our troops in Iraq. Although I was glad to see those who made it, the area around the bell tower and amphitheatre looked a little bit empty.

Every one of us should want to get involved more with our government. Let's face it, George W. Bush has divided this nation into two groups: those for him, and those against him. We have never lived in more partisan times in our nation; we face many issues, such as the PATRIOT ACT, pro-choice v. pro-life, stem cell research, tax cuts for the wealthy, a social security system that is in trouble, record national debt, gay marriage, terrorism, hurricane relief for New Orleans, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. As many of you know, next year is an election year, and we, the youth of our nation, need to say something.

As the recruitment chair for Students for Political Awareness (SFPA), I feel obligated to get as many individuals as I can involved in the political process. Whether you are a liberal, conservative or a moderate or just want to know more about what is going on in Washington, Lansing, and the county seats, get involved with the SFPA so you can gain knowledge.

And as we all know, knowledge is power. Go to these events that are offered to you, regardless of whether or not you gain extra credit in a class. I know a lot of you are not political science majors like I am, but having said that, you do not have to be to get anything out of these events.

We are all here to broaden our horizons and become well rounded individuals. If you become knowledgeable about your government, people will take note.
