The SVSU volleyball team had a tough trio of matches this past weekend, starting at Lake Superior State and ending at Michigan Tech.

Since getting off to a fast 3-1 start, the Cardinals have gone 3-12 since and have yet to win a conference game.

On Sunday against Michigan Tech, the Cardinals traded wins in the first two games of the match, as the Huskies took game one 31-29, while SVSU answered with a 30-26 triumph in game two.

MTU was then very dominant, turning up its offensive output in the final two games, compiling a .333 attack percentage in game three and a .516 clip in game four. SVSU was looking to gain its first victory in the conference against the Huskies, who are also in the bottom of the standings with SVSU.

As a team, Tech finished with 12 total blocks, compared to nine from the Cardinals. Sophomore Danielle Dryer was tied with the most kills for the game with 16. Her teammate, junior Suzanne Beaver, was second on the team with 15 kills. Sophomore Amy Howard again showed her importance to the team with a game high 44 assists.

On Saturday, SVSU was in Marquette, taking on Northern Michigan. NMU is one of the strong teams in the conference, currently second in the conference.

The Cardinals were dominated in every aspect of the game against the Wildcats. NMU was on fire, having a hitting percentage of .439. They also contributed 55 kills, while SVSU was only able to muster 32.

Senior Julie Ritsema collected eight kills, while teammates Beaver and freshman Sarah Redoute each led the team with nine kills. Howard led the team in assists, with 18.

The only close game the Cardinals had all weekend was against Lake Superior State on Friday. The team stayed with the Lakers in the first match and won the second, but after that it was all LSSU.

Beaver had a team-high 17 kills, but hit just .160 for the match. This was the ninth time this season that she had 10 or more kills in a game.

Howard registered a season high 47 assists out of the team's 54 and added nine digs. Redoute had a double-double with 15 digs and 11 kills, but also had 12 attack errors and hit in negative figures.

SVSU will stay on the road for its next two games, taking on Wayne State on Friday, and then Hillsdale on Saturday.
