Late goals propel women over Mercyhurst, 4-2

The SVSU women's soccer team scored two goals in the first 15 minutes and the final 15 minutes to defeat Mercyhurst at home Saturday.

After taking an early 2-0 lead off goals by junior Kelly Pruitt and freshman Tammie Edmunds, the Cardinals squandered the lead before halftime, giving up two goals to the Lakers.

But Pruitt scored again with less than 15 minutes left in the second half to put the Cardinals back on top, and Edmunds put her second ball in the net three minutes later for an insurance goal.

The goals were Pruitt's second and third, while Edmunds scored her first two of the season.

Junior goalkeeper Stacy LaLond was big for the Cardinals, as SVSU was out shot 11-8 during the game.

LaLond, who has been in net every game for SVSU, made nine saves and improved her record to 3-2-1 on the season.

The game was the first for the Cardinals since a road 2-0 loss to SUI-Edwardsville on Sunday, Sept. 11.

With the win the Cardinals have started the GLIAC schedule 1-0, while the loss put Mercyhurst at 0-1 in the conference and 6-2 overall.

SVSU plays its next game on Saturday at 3 p.m., when they host Wheeling Jesuit.

The team's next GLIAC contest will be the next day when the Cards host Gannon at 1 p.m.

After that the Cardinals will be off for nearly two weeks before visiting Northwood on Friday, Oct. 14.
