The SVSU men's golf team turned in their second straight top five team finish of the season with a fourth place finish at the Grand Valley Fall Invitational on Monday, Sept. 19.

The 36-hole invitational, held at The Meadows Golf Course in Allendale, was a one day event that featured eight GLIAC schools including Ferris State and Grand Valley State.

The champions from Findlay University fired a team score of 595 compared to the Cardinals' 619. The Oilers boasted three individual golfers to finish in the overall top five. The scores for the Oilers were impressive considering the severe weather conditions that were passing through the area at the time, said Cardinals head coach Andy Bethune.

"There was a pretty big storm blowing through during the match," he said. "Findlay played well. Anytime you can shoot below 600 in those conditions, you're playing pretty well. That is something that we need to work on as a team."

Sophomore Sean Rutherford, playing as an individual, finished in a tie for third with a four-over-par 148 (rounds of 70 and 78). Junior Adam Miller, playing with the team, turned in another strong performance with a 153 (73, 80). Juniors Joe Beyer (75, 79) and Scott Urquhart (75, 79) were not far behind Miller with a 154 each. Freshman Sean Patrick, playing as the second individual, continued to step up with a 157 (77, 80). Sophomore Mike King (158) and senior Adam Haswell (163) rounded out the team scoring for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals were in South Haven today and yesterday for the first of three NCAA Regional Qualifiers. If they perform well enough in the three qualifiers they could receive a bid to the national tournament in the spring. Bethune knows the consequences, but the strong performances that his team has posted this season (third and fourth place finishes) have given him confidence in their abilities to post high scores and compete with anyone.

"We're on the right track," he said. "Any time you have success in golf, it multiplies. We're going to look to keep up the winning and continue to turn in strong performances."
