The Student Association appointed three new representatives Monday during an informal meeting.

Students Anderson Bearden, Jessica Gibson, and Jordan Vinson were selected among a group of six candidates that gave presentations before SA.

Only two representatives were supposed to be appointed this semester, after the departures of Zachary Beach and Andrea Bednarski, but representative Artist Pietrykowski resigned the week before the appointments, leaving another spot available.

"We're very excited about our recent additions," President Emily Hammerbacher said. "Each student brings something new to the association through their affiliation with other student organizations, athletics, and the diversity of their backgrounds."

The candidates filled out applications for the House to review, and gave speeches explaining the qualifications they had to be a representative. SA members were able to ask questions following the speeches.

The three new representatives were appointed over students Thomas Falkner, Eric Kucharczyk, and Charles Moser.

Bearden, a fourth-year history education major, was the editor-in-chief of Cardinal Sins last year. He also is a member of the Academic Integrity Committee, and has worked with Dr. Mamie Thorns in the Office of Diversity Programs.

"I would like to see more student involvement," Bearden wrote in his application. "It bothers me that professors have to bribe students with extra credit to get them to see some of the wonderful speakers that have come here."

Gibson is a third-year psychology major and a member of the women's soccer team. A Saginaw native, she expressed her displeasure with the term "Sagnasty" as part of her speech and her desire to bring a change to the perceived negative attitude about it.

A member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, Gibson had some thoughts on athletics involvement, too.

"One change I would like to see on SVSU's campus is more advertising and student support for the different sports teams, not only the basketball and football teams," she wrote. "I would also like to see more athletes and their teams participate in other events on campus besides just their team activites."

Vinson, a second-year elementary education major, brings experience and leadership skills to SA. As president of her fairly small senior class, she wrote, she had to take on several key positions and take control.

Additionally, as an African American woman, Vinson said she felt most events on campus are not geared towards all races, and encouraged a change.

A University-wide election will also be held for five freshmen or transfer student representatives the week of Oct. 3.

The deadline for potential candidates to have their applications in is today by midnight to the Student Life Center.
