IM Sports Update
New season kicks off this week
September 12, 2005 —
Cards' Party
Campus Recreation will have a table set up at this Thursday's Cards' Party. The table will feature a sign-up sheet for an Intramural Sports e-mail list service, so students can have the latest news about IM programs. There will also be a survey for students to take, probing the interest of specific IM programs and club sports. Those who complete the survey will be entered in a drawing for a basketball autographed by Saginaw native Jason Richardson of the Golden State Warriors.
Application deadlines
Two deadlines are approaching for registering for this fall's IM sports. Tomorrow is the deadline for 9-on-9 outdoor soccer, to be played at the Intramural Fields on Fridays from noon to 3 p.m., and golf, which will be played on Fridays at Beech Hollow in Kochville Township at 2 p.m. Signup for the Sept. 25 and 26 softball tournament and tennis is Friday.
Gilby Award
A new IM season is also a new beginning for students looking to win the Gilby Award, given to the best IM player of the academic year. To win the Gilby Award, a student must play three different sports throughout the year - soccer in the fall and spring, for instance, does not count - and his or her team must win one of those sports' postseason tournaments. Those that meet the two requirements are nominated for the award, which is voted on by a panel of coaches, athletic trainers, and Student Life staff. Only one Gilby Award is given out per year, and the winner receives $50 at the Student Life Awards during the Winter semester.
Racquetball
The rules for racquetball court reservations have changed. Those wishing to reserve a court can now only reserve one a week in advance. Reservations can be made on Fridays from 7 a.m. until noon. KJ Foster, Campus Recreation coordinator, said the change was made "in order to promote student use of our courts." He said courts were sometimes being reserved up to eight weeks in advance, and the student complaints compelled him to change the rules. To make reservations, call 964-7333.
