Tennis team up to .500 with 9-0 win
September 12, 2005 —
The SVSU tennis team was dominant Saturday, beating visiting Ashland University with a score of 9-0.
Playing on the home court, the Cardinals won both the singles and doubles matches, while Ashland could muster only one set victory. It was from the third match played from the day, between SVSU's Maggie Dodson and AU's Michelle Maxwell. Dodson lost the first set 5-7, but came back strong with 6-0 and 10-1 finishes.
"I was pleased overall with the effort that the team gave today," said second-year SVSU coach Mike Major. "I liked our intensity. You have to come out from the beginning with a fast start in doubles, and every doubles team was up 3-0 at the start (Saturday)."
Other scores in the singles matches were Andrea Prociv defeating Lauren Knasel in straight sets (6-4, 7-5), and Katie Hanover coming out on top of Chelsey Guerin with scores of 6-3 and 7-5.
The Cards also had victories from Brooke Kennedy, Danielle Coldren, and Lacie Rudolph, as the home crowd cheered them on.
"I'd also like to thank the fan support for today," Major said. "It was great to see everyone come up early today before the football game to cheer us on."
During the double matches SVSU was just as dominant as the pairing of Prociv and Kennedy was too much for Knasel and Maxwell to handle. The final score was 8-3.
Schultz was teamed with Hanover and Dodson, while Coldren also won their matches, respectfully.
This drops Ashland to 0-4 on the season, while SVSU goes to 1-1. The next match for the Cardinals comes tomorrow with a trip to Northwood University, a team that Major thinks has a shot a becoming something big.
"Northwood is going to be very good this year," he said. "I see them as the team to beat in the conference and having the skills to win a national championship."
On Friday, the team opened up their season against Mercyhurst College. They finished the match with a 6-3 loss.
Kennedy was the only Cardinal to win her singles match. She was victorious at four singles, 6-4, 4-6, 10-4 over Maria Franco.
Mercyhurst won the top three singles matches and the top two doubles matches.
