Students disappointing at game
September 12, 2005 —
The new seating that was added at Wickes Memorial Stadium this summer and finally opened for this season's first home game apparently is not appreciated as it should be. The scene for kickoff on Saturday was certainly something different than has been seen here: a loud, rowdy student section in the north end zone with the band flanked to their right, and a full home cheering section.
In the first half, the student section was what it is supposed to be. When Wayne State recovered a fumble and was deep in SVSU territory in the second quarter, they were only able to come away with a field goal after a goal line stand by the Cardinals. The student section, at that point, was as loud as it has ever been. It most likely helped the defense in their stand, and also probably hindered the Warriors' ability to communicate on the field.
But then, for some reason, the student section basically disappeared.
When the second half started, the question was no longer, "How about the new seats?" It was, "What happened to the student section?" What was at one point the highlight of the game turned into nothing, as at least 50 percent of the student section was nowhere to be found. We'll ask the question again: What happened?
More importantly, what is the point of having the new section of seats if students are not actually going to take advantage of them? While the final score of the football game was 29-3, it was only 13-3 at halftime - still a relatively close game. To see a majority of the student section gone by halftime was disheartening.
For a group that generally prides itself on being one of the best student sections in the GLIAC (hell, we are even the best student section when we travel to big games like Northwood and Grand Valley) leaving at halftime is unacceptable. We would imagine if it were Grand Valley down 13-3 at halftime, not a single person would have left.
Much like the football team has to play as hard every game as if it were Grand Valley, we should be supporting them just the same. To not is a slap in the face to our team, and a waste of the new section.
