Fund-raiser marks opening of exhibition in Art Gallery
August 25, 2005 —
A collection of fine wood art from 71 international artists will be featured in an exhibition at the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum at Saginaw Valley State University. "Nature Transformed: Wood Art from the Bohlen Collection," will go on display Friday, Oct. 14 through April 30, 2006.
To celebrate the display's opening and commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month, the Museum will host "Saints, Sinners and Salsa," a celebration of Mexican art and civilization, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 14. It will be the Museum's first such fund-raising event, honoring the region's cultural diversity with salsa music, dancers, and authentic Mexican dishes from guest chefs. There also will be a silent auction of works by Michigan artists.
Tickets for the event are $50 per person, $25 of which is tax-deductible. Tickets may be purchased through the SVSU Foundation at (989) 964-4052, or at the door.
"Nature Transformed" will highlight the collection of fine wood art recently given to the University of Michigan's Museum of Art by Michigan residents Robert M. and Lillian Montalto Bohlen. Approximately 80 works from North American, European and Australian artists are included in the collection.
The exhibition will feature three sections: "The Vessel Unleashed" contains objects that retain some semblance of the vessel form but are more sculptural than functional; "Sculptural Tendencies" includes works by artists who continue the tradition of producing purely sculptural forms in wood by taking advantage of the medium's special properties and creative opportunities; and "Allusions to Nature," links pieces that take inspiration from, or otherwise embody, nature in all its diversity.
The Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum is located in the Arbury Fine Arts Center on the campus of Saginaw Valley State University.
Summer hours (through Labor Day) are Tuesday through Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.
