Poetry, sculpture combined in Gallery

The creative works of two sisters exploring parallel life themes is the basis of an exhibition now on display at the Saginaw Valley State University Art Gallery. The show, "Memories We Keep," features the mixed-media sculpture of Ruth Ann Bowman and the poetry of her sister, Jane Bowman Smith.

For the show, the sisters have coordinated their work so that the poetry relates to the visual language of the sculpture, and the sculpture reflects the mood and spirit of the poetry.

Bowman, a professor in the Department of Art at the University of Kansas and Smith, an English professor at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina, use their work to explore the themes of a shared family history. The sisters grew up together in the Midwest during the 1950s in a "strongly female environment" where they had no brothers or uncles.

"Memories We Keep" will be on display until Saturday, Aug. 20.

The University Art Gallery is located in the Arbury Fine Arts Center. Summer semester hours are noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday.
