Students not alone awaiting spring break
March 1, 2010 —
Grocery store shelves stocked with Cadbury eggs and snow melting from the ground — that combo can only mean one thing: spring break.
As Cardinals prepare for travel to various tropical locations (many of which are not so tropical, including Mom and Dad’s place), SVSU professors are equally as excited for the break.
“You guys think you are tired,” biology professor Aron Drake said.
Drake’s break plans include sleeping and preparing for the second half of the semester.
“Unfortunately, my son has school, so we will definitely not be traveling,” he said. “We will probably try to do something fun around here though.”
Assistant professor of sociology Brian Thomas also will enjoy an uneventful break.
“I’ll be grading and catching up on other work for most of the week,” he said.
But some SVSU staff members will be trading wintry Michigan weather for warmer climes.
Theater professor Ric Roberts will join four of his top musical theater students and Janna Kern, an academic adviser, and travel to the Sunshine State for the fifth annual Friends in Florida event.
The group will make its way down to Bonita Springs, Flor., on Thursday and stay until Sunday.
“We will all be performing 18 to 20 selections from top Broadway musicals,” Roberts said, naming titles such as Phantom of the Opera, Les Mis, The Producers, Young Frankenstein and Throughly Modern Millie.
Calling it “a sort of musical review,” Kern said the group will perform for a group of university donors and alumni who live there.
Roberts and some theater students performed last year at the same event, and they were invited back for another go. This year, Roberts had to hold tryouts for the spots because so many students wanted to attend.
“Andy Bethune, chair of the SVSU Foundation, is responsible for bringing this group to the event for the last two years,” Roberts said.
Kern admitted if not for this Florida trip, her spring break would be a little uneventful.
“My spring break is usually spent at work,” she said, “or I’ll take the week off to do some oil painting or home improvements.”
