Program Board delays concert to fall semester
February 8, 2010 —
The Program Board has decided to postpone its planned spring concert until fall 2010.
“We ran into a couple snags with venues,” said John Reno, president of the event-planning organization.
Reno said there are multiple advantages associated with the change, including having more time to plan. Program Board members were worried that if they stayed with the tentative date in April, they couldn’t plan a successful event. They hope to be able to make the concert “perfect” with the extra months.
The group will also end up with more money in its budget, because funds will roll over from this semester. This will allow the group to book a bigger name, which will hopefully attract more of an audience.
This delay will allow for a larger-scale advertising campaign.
“We want to try to do some information tables, interactive things ... and find some unique avenues,” said Kim Brandimore- Horton, Program Board adviser.
Additionally, the board is hoping students will be more likely to buy tickets in the fall. Because students will work during the summer, they may have more money to buy a ticket.
The postponement, Reno said, will also allow more options for a performer. The genre remains uncertain, but the board has focused on country and alternative rock.
“Depending on what day we decide on, we’ll see what ... talent is available,” Reno said.
Students are welcome to voice their opinions on the concert. “We need more students to come out ... [and] tell us who they want to see,” Brandimore-Horton said.
The change brings opportunity. Without a spring concert, the budget has been reopened for further programming this semester.
The board wants to host a larger scale event, as well as smaller ones. An example is the coffeehouse series. The first was a success, according to Reno, who said that many students are interested in another. The next event will be held March 1.
Brandimore-Horton wanted to stress that all students are welcome to participate in Program Board. Meetings are at 10 p.m. Wednesday nights in the Alumni Lounge.
“The more people involved the better,” she said. “We want every possible piece of input we can get.”
You can voice your opinions about the Program Board’s plans at its weekly meetings. If you attend at least two of these, you can cast your vote as a member.
