Police briefs

Police briefs are written according to reports from University Police. These indicate preliminary descriptions of events and not necessarily actual incidents.

Dangerous activity

• Three gunshots were fired at the Townhomes at 3:40 a.m. Friday, Feb. 5.

A witness reported seeing a male raise a gun and fire three shots into the air. Officers found the bullet casings for a .38-caliber weapon. The witness said the man was headed toward campus, but no suspects were found.

Minors in possession

• On Monday, Jan. 25, a student was caught with marijuana in Living Center North. His roommate had gotten locked out of the room and called Residential Life to come unlock the door. When Residential Life arrived, the representative could smell marijuana.

Police were called and one of the students admitted to having it. Warrants have been sought, and the case will be handled internally.

• On Sunday, Jan. 24, a resident assistant saw students drinking outdoors in the University Village. The RA knocked to be let in, but residents would not answer their door.

Residential Life was notified, and representatives entered the room. Two students received minor in possessions; the rest were at least 21.

• One minor in possession was issued at 5:57 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 31. A police officer was patrolling campus when he noticed a male staggering in the grass. The male then fell on his back in Lot L. The officer went to check on him and smelled alcohol. The student blew over the limit and was issued the citation.

• On Sunday, Feb. 7 at 2:20 a.m., students under the age of 21 were given open intoxicant citations.

The officer pulled over their vehicle on Bay and College roads after they made an illegal left turn. The officer then found open alcohol in the vehicle. Trespassing

• An ex-student who had been kicked off campus last year was caught on campus at 2:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 29. A University Police officer was in Living Center North doing his daily rounds when he saw suspicious behavior in the halls.

The officer caught a glimpse of the ex-student and followed both him and his girlfriend to the third floor. After discovering they had been drinking, he issued the female student a minor in possession and arrested the male.

Last year, the female student had filed a domestic violence charge on the male.

• A non-student was taken to jail for trespassing Thursday, Feb. 4. An anonymous tipper told campus police that he was in the University Village around 8 p.m. He was kicked off campus last year for being involved in a larceny case and damaging vehicles.

Theft

• A car was stolen from Lot F on Thursday, Feb. 4. The vehicle belonged to an SVSU staff member who believes the keys were dropped earlier in the morning. There are no suspects.

• A student from Living Center North who had her textbooks stolen in the fall had another one taken this semester. The book reappeared after the bookstore would not take it back, owing to writings on the book’s front cover.

In addition, her roommate’s debit card was stolen sometime this week. Five purchases were made before the card was canceled. The case is under investigation.

• A student’s phone was stolen and found Wednesday, Jan. 27. A student had her phone before going to a friend’s room in Living Center North. After wrestling with her friend, she discovered her phone was missing. The male student she was wrestling with admitted to stealing it and now there is a warrant for his arrest.

• A student’s artwork was stolen from Arbury Center’s second floor sometime between Thursday, Jan. 21 and Monday, Jan. 25.

The artwork had been on display for two years, and the student needs it for her final project. Campus police are offering a $50 reward for any information.

• On Sunday, Jan. 31, two students from the First Year Suites reported to campus police that an unwelcome male had been in their room, kneeling by their refrigerator with an open backpack.

The male then ran out of the room and crouched in front of another door at the housing complex. Campus police caught footage of him, and the students recognized the backpack.

Later that evening, another resident from the Suites called saying that an X Box had been stolen. The police contacted the suspect and found he had all the items in his room. The thief says he doesn’t remember anything because he had been drunk.

Campus police is still investigating because a third resident reported that frozen food and DVDs had been stolen from a suite around 4 a.m.

Campus police checked the male student’s room from earlier that night and found many wrappers of frozen food in his trash. Police say these cases could be connected.

Tape was strung across the room, and inappropriate words were written all over the walls, ceiling and toilet paper. The furniture had been moved around and coffee grounds spilled all over the bathroom.
