Men finish in second place, women come in eighth at GLIAC’s

The men’s and women’s cross country teams competed over the weekend in the GLIAC Championships. The comparisons ended there.

While the men’s team found themselves finishing in second place, the women’s team came in a distant eighth.

On the men’s side, rival Grand Valley won the event with a total of 21 points. The Cardinals 23 points was good enough for a second place finish, well ahead of Hillsdale, which finished with 90 points.

Three Cardinals finished in the top 10s, with Steve Genther leading the way with a time of 24:47. Genther’s time put him in third place overall. Sophomore Nick Eckel finished in sixth place with a time of 24:59. Eckel finished just before his teammate, senior Cortland Seaver, who finished in a time of 25:11, good enough for eighth.

Senior Derek Stone came in at 25:34, good for 14th, and freshman Marion Body crossing the line in 26:03 and in 27th.

After the runners had completed the race, the awards kept coming for the Cardinals.

Genther and Eckel were both voted onto the First Team All-GLIAC Team, while Stone and Seaver were voted onto the Second Team.

On the women’s side, Grand Valley also won the competition, coming in with a total of 20 points. The Cards’ finished with a total of 210 points, although they finished ahead of Michigan Tech, Tiffin, Northwood and Lake Superior State.

Senior Amber Catlin was the Cards’ top finisher, completing the race with a time of 23:18. She finished in 37th.

Sophomore Ashley Meyer was next in for the Cardinals, at 23:43 and 50th. Senior Amanda Roache’s time of 23:55 was good for 60th. The next two finishers for the Cardinals, sophomore Jean Hollerbach and sophomore Megan Pittoors, completed the race in times of 24:01 and 24:14, which completed the scoring for the lady Cards’.

With the GLIAC’s out of the way, both the men and women’s teams look ahead to competing in the Great Lakes Regional in Kenosha, Wisc., on Nov. 7. The NCAA Natinoal Championships follow the Great Lakes Regional on Nov. 21 in Evansville, Ind.
