Heroes of homecoming week
October 5, 2009 —
Superheroes and their archenemies were doing the “Cupid Shuffle” in the Cardinal Gym on Thursday night. Of course, they were just waiting for a winner to be announced.
As part of the Homecoming Variety Show, student organizations gave performances surrounding this year’s theme, “Superheroes: Truth, Justice and the Cardinal Way.” The event was part of a weeklong celebration preparing for Saturday’s football game against Northern Michigan University.
Ashlie Tillman, treasurer of Program Board and master of ceremonies for the night, announced that first prize went to Tau Kappa Epsilon. The fraternity’s skit included a “Superhero Senior Center,” in which a nurse had to take care of aging comic book heroes The Flash, Wolverine, Batman and the Incredible Hulk. During a flashback, when all the heroes were in a predicament, it was the SVSU Cardinal who came and saved the day.
Kimberly Brandimore, director of Student Life, said they got the Athletic Department involved because the game was the highlight of homecoming.
Four representatives judged the event to avoid having personal relationships with Student Life workers influence the results.
Organizations were awarded points for school spirit, creativity and adherence to the theme. Extra points were awarded for including their organizations’ advisers and homecoming king and queen nominees.
Just as villains and superheroes came together, so did student organizations for a fun night of school spirit.
