And the Biggest Idiot of the Night award goes to ...

On Sept. 13, 2009, MTV hosted the 26th annual Video Music Awards in New York City. It’s a time for artists to be appreciated for their hard work and rewarded for their talent. Once again, Kanye West had to open his big mouth and put a damper on the evening.

Taylor Swift, a 19-year old country singer, won Best Female Video for her song “You Belong to Me.” In the middle of giving her speech, West took the microphone from her hand.

“I’m going to let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time,” West said. How does a person respond to a comment like that on national TV?

Can you imagine being at a wedding during the best man’s speech and having some yahoo announce that the wedding he was at last week was ten times better? Personally, I would be thinking of inhumane things to do the guy and try to move on with my speech. Then maybe afterwords I would step outside with him. Fortunately, Swift took it like a trouper.

I hope the 32-year-old is proud of the fact that he ruined one of the most important and proudest times of Swift’s life. She is the only country singer to win this award. It was her moment to shine with the honor. Not only did he offend her but also her family and fans.

This isn’t the first time West has created problems at award shows. In 2006, he was a sore loser during the European Music Awards. After he lost to Justice and Simian for Best Video, he jumped on stage and ruined their speech. In 2004, he complained about not winning the American Music Award. He reminds me of the bully on the bus that everyone is afraid to walk past because you don’t know how he will react to you. You stay away and think to yourself, I hope he is in a good mood.

Hasn’t Kanye West heard of blogging or Twitter? He could have waited until after the show or for an interview. He put Swift in an uncomfortable position in front on millions of people. Swift took the blow and performed live five minutes later.

The next day West appeared on Jay Leno’s show. He realized that he was in the wrong after he handed the microphone back and Swift was speechless. What could she have said? Thanks, Kanye. Enjoy the rest of the show! Everyone makes mistakes, but how many times can Kanye West do it and be forgiven? Tears came to his eyes when Leno asked him what his mother would say. I say, save the tears.

The rudeness of West’s comment did make the VMA a big deal, but what show wants to be famous for jerks? West should have realized he was out of line. I award Kanye with the Biggest Idiot of the Night award.
