Ward sets team record for most digs in Cardinals win

Team goes five sets to defeat Northern Michigan before dropping 3-0 to Michigan Tech

The Northern Michigan Wildcats moved their record to 4-5 in overall season Sept. 11 when they lost to the Cardinals at SVSU. The match was a five-set and began the GLIAC schedule for the Cards.

The Cardinals took the first set in a narrow victory of 25-23. The Wildcats came back, winning the third and fourth sets 25-13 and, after a long struggle, 31-29.

The Cardinals finished strong, though, with another 25-23 win in the fifth set and finished the match with a 21-19 victory, shades of last season when SVSU beat Northern Michigan all three times they faced each other 3-0, 3-0, 3-1.

The Lady Cards were led defensively by sophomore Laura Ward who managed 28 digs, a team record. Senior Allison Schlinkert and sophomore Annie Buxton led the front line in kills with 15 apiece. Sophomore Katie Fitzgerald, junior Jessica Treiber and Senior Jaclyn Carnago were all major threats offensively as well.

The weekend would not be entirely victorious for SVSU. The Michigan Tech Huskies won a 3-0 match against the Cardinals on Sept. 12 after beating Lake Superior State 3-0 the previous night.

The girls still performed well, with the leaders from Friday stepping up again. Schlinkert and Fitzgerald once again tied in kills, posting nine each by the end of the match. Harris set 33 assists against the Huskies, having set 44 assists against the Wildcats. Joining the leaders for Saturday’s game was sophomore Laura Ward who earned 11 digs as libero.

The matches of the weekend put SVSU’s record at 6-4 for the season, 1-1 in the GLIAC.

The Cardinals hit the road for their next five matches, beginning Tuesday at Lake Superior State University. After completing the road stretch, the Cards will return home for a four-game homestand, starting Oct. 2 against Northwood.

All four of the home games are against GLIAC opponents.
