Mockers rock in courtyard
Battle of the Valleys
September 14, 2009 —
This year’s Battle of the Valleys got off to a wild start Tuesday evening as nearly 100 students crowded the courtyard for the “Mock Rock” kickoff party.
The lip-synching and dancing contest featured 29 performers in eight groups, spoofing past hits from Cyndi Lauper to ‘N Sync. The winners would be the group that received the most donations from the audience.
“Get ready for a musical-geniusclassic that all of you know that’s right up there with Sebastian Bach,” said master of ceremonies Dan Porta, referencing the Canadian exfrontman of heavy metal band Skid Row.
With that, Nathan Cormier and Mike Morrow acted out Bon Jovi’s “It’s My Life” onstage, re-imagining it as one man’s struggle for the freedom to wear gold chains, torn tank-tops and cutoffs. Wild gestures and fiery air-guitar solos kept the audience in stitches until the final, climactic high-five.
Other popular acts included the hip-hop parody “I’m on a Boat” and the line-dancing sensation “Cupid Shuffle,” which had many in the audience out of their seats and dancing along.
Porta, a communication and marketing senior, then spun Huey’s “Pop, Lock and Drop It,” enjoining the crowd to “come on up and show us all your popping, locking and dropping talents.” About fifteen students complied, climbing onto the stage for a club-dancing free-for-all.
The winners were Porta and partner Matthew Cox, who performed a gender-bending rendition of the Disney song “A Whole New World,” with Porta as Aladdin and Cox as Jasmine. The audience laughed at the exaggerated expressions and gestures, all the way up to the final kiss — on the cheek.
