Battle of the Valleys

The shouts, chants and laughs of about 600 students spilled from the Rhea Miller Recital Hall Wednesday at the second annual Price is Right event.

The event, based on the hit ABC game show, raised $1,216 in ticket sales and an additional $300 in T-shirt sales to go toward funds for the Boys & Girls Club.

The Price is Right was first produced on campus last year to relieve students of exam stress. It filled the Malcolm Field Theatre.

Seeing its success, student leaders decided it would become one of the fundraising events for the seventh annual Battle of the Valleys.

This year, the Rhea Miller Recital Hall—lower level and balcony—was filled. Some students stood, sat on railings or took extra chairs at the back. Nearly $3,000 in prizes were given out.

Many attendees said they hoped for a chance in the spotlight, but other students said they just wanted cheap entertainment for the night.

“I was surprised I even got picked,” said Scott Burnham, a computer information systems junior and the first person chosen to “come on down.” He won the studio lounger futon on his first bid.

Business junior Edward Kennedy scoffed at Burnham’s winnings.

“I bought his ticket,” said Kennedy, laughing. “We said we’d split anything we won. I wanted to keep the futon at my apartment, but he traded the futon for the PSP.”

In the end, Alex Kern won the showcase prize: a stay at a hotel and water park in Ohio for four, a package worth more than $500.

Prizes not awarded to players during the game were raffled after the show.

“Overall,” Burnham said, “I think it was an awesome turnout.”
