Track team performs well at Cardinal Collegiate Open

The Saginaw Valley State University indoor track teams held the Cardinal Collegiate Open at the Ryder Center Friday, Jan. 14. Both the men's and women's squads had a good showing while competing in front of the home crowd.

Northwood, Ferris State, and Aquinas College all competed in the meet. No team scores were calculated for the meet, but six Cardinals on the men's squad placed first as well as the distance medley team.

Senior Jerome Recker finished first in the mile run with a time of 4:25.16. Junior Adam Roach led the way in the 800 meters; his time was 1:58.51. Sophomore James Gale and Freshman Sean Egan were both part of the Saginaw Track Club; Gale was first in the 5000 meters, coming in at 15:16.00, while Egan topped all putters with a distance of 48 feet, 2 inches.

The rest of the individual Cardinals that placed first were Senior Mario Guerrero and Freshman Eltaro Hooper, as each jumped 6'4" in the high jump to tie for first place. The distance medley relay team came in at 10:47.72 and consisted of Roach, Senior Kenny Williams and Sophomores Justin Grow and Len Weddel.

The women had five first place individual finishes, a first place victory in the 1600-meter relay, and a new Cardinal Collegiate Open record.

Freshman Becca Rudey broke the record in the 1600-meter run, with a time of 5:21.13. She also took in second place honors in the 3000 meters with a time 10:43.22.

The Lady Cardinals dominated the 800 meter run with a first, second, and third place showing.

Sophomore Jessica Sweeney came across the line first (2:21.52), with Sophomore Krystin Vogel (2:24.54) and Freshman Courtney Kotewa (2:26.9) not far behind. Senior Mandie Gallier won the 400 meter dash with a time of 59.16 seconds.

Junior Lisa Fair tied for first place in the 60 meter hurdles, coming in at 9.30 seconds. Gallier and Fair teamed up with Sweeney and Freshman Ashley Coppens to win the 1600-meter relay, as they ran a time of 4:08.10. Senior Ashley Christie won the pole vault, clearing a height of 10 feet.

Up next for both squads will be the Saginaw Valley State University Collegiate Open, scheduled to begin at 4 pm Friday, Jan. 21 in the O'Neill Arena.
