Alternative Breaks student helps women in Chicago, in the process finds herself

After six months and successfully completing 40 hours of domestic violence training, I hopped on my first train, listened to a few James Taylor songs, and looked forward to the adventure I was about to embark on in Chicago. The trip was not only an adventure, but it was also a learning experience. I traveled with six other SVSU female students to the Windy City and we spent our spring break volunteering our time to those in need.

Before the trip I found myself wondering what I could possibly do for someone in a city like Chicago; however, after the trip was over, I learned of many tasks that can be done to help. Our trip was focused towards women's issues and we spent most of our time volunteering at a domestic violence shelter. At the shelter, we sorted through boxes, spoke with victims of domestic violence, and learned about advocacy. Most importantly, we learned about ourselves.

It is amazing what trips such as these can teach a person. Although each of the group members had a different background, we all found the experience to be an eye-opener. We completed tasks at the women's shelter that may not have shown a physical result, but will indirectly reach people that our group will probably never meet. The feeling I experienced from this work was rewarding and gave me a sense of who I am.

Growing up in a small town can be a blessing, but in situations like these, it can also be a downfall. I have never had to worry about where I will sleep at night or when the next time is that I will eat. As a matter of fact, these necessities were available in abundance to me and still are. While in Chicago, I watched mothers dig through garbage as if it were a gold mine, just to make sure their child did not go without. I witnessed the homeless men and women sleeping on the train just to stay warm at night. These sights and others are the norm in the big city. However, I don't think many people nowadays step out of their present situation in life to look at the big picture.

The trip to Chicago was another successful SVSU Alternative Break. I reached people I will never meet, met people who share passion in the same issues as myself and bonded with six other amazing women whom I will never forget. Coming back to Saginaw gives me a sense of comfort, but it does not let life in the big city dissipate. The issues are and will always be present if others choose to ignore the problem.

The overall trip to Chicago taught me to look at life as a blessing, instead of always worrying about what could possibly make it a little better.

So, I challenge you. The next time you have to wake up for an early morning class, smile, because you have the resources to get an education and may be able to help those who may not be as fortunate.
