Fraternity goes national

SVSU's chapter of Nu Lambda Nu has gone national and is now Phi Kappa Tau.

The fraternity formerly known as Nu Lambda Nu, which has 27 members, has been on campus since December 2006. The fraternity has increased its recruitment this year - last fall brought in 10 new members and this semester brought another seven.

The fraternity puts on philanthropy events, such as the Pie a Nu Guy event, the proceeds of which went to support Hole in the Wall, a camp for terminally ill children. They also participate in homecoming events and are involved with other organizations on campus, as well as intramural sports. Each member puts in community service hours and teams up with other Greek oraganizations to raise money for charities and causes.

According to PKT member and junior Matt Pierson, Phi Kappa Tau is what the men of Nu Lambda Nu were trying to achieve since the first day they existed on SVSU's campus.

"Our ultimate goal is to broaden the spectrum and alter perceptions of Greek life here at SVSU," Pierson said. "It's all about turning boys into men, building character, and learning how to take on the real world."

Freshman Mario Volante, who rushed last fall, said he joined Phi Kappa Tau because, "I missed the brotherhood of a football team, so I joined this brotherhood. The guys are great to be around, and it has put so many more opportinities in front of me."

Phi Kappa Tau said they it believes Greek life is often percieved the wrong way. The fraternity says it's not all about drinking and dating, but about community and fellowship, and academics come first.
