Davis repairs to start in May
Travelers may need to find new route
March 10, 2008 —
Students who take Davis Road through campus will soon find themselves searching for another shortcut.
SVSU recently acquired the stretch of Davis Road from Pierce to College Drive from the county, and are planning on making much-needed improvements. According to James Muladore, vice president for administration and business affairs, Davis Road was not designed for the current amount of traffic, both vehicle and pedestrian, that it currently supports.
"A number of years ago, that area was viewed as the edge of campus," Muladore said. "The reality of it is today it's a pretty active, busy area."
Following the replacement of the water line, the road will be resurfaced, and the area itself will undergo an overhaul to make the road and its surrounding area resemble the rest of campus. The plan includes more sidewalks, better lighting, and crosswalk areas, all of which are designed for a safer environment.
Student inconvenience, in particular those who commute, was another factor in deciding when construction on the road will begin. Although construction will primarily take place between May and July when campus traffic is lightest, there will be delays.
"We are making every effort to have the road open, even if it's just one lane," he said. "But people should plan for the worst case scenario, that being that the road will be closed.
"The prime construction time during the year in Michigan is spring and summer, so given the expected length of the project, we have to start before the winter actually ends so that we can be done by the start of the fall semester."
Despite any possible inconviences or delays, Muladore thinks that temporary inconveniences will, over time, provide long-lasting satisfaction with the surrounding area.
"My goal is to keep everybody happy," Muladore said. "They may not be happy over the next couple months, but in the long run, they'll be happy."
