Spicing up life
January 21, 2008 —
Five pop icons have captured the heart of Rebecca Kimble, elementary education senior, since she was 12 years old. With the long-awaited reunion of Baby, Posh, Sporty, Ginger, and Scary, she may finally have her chance to meet her idols, the Spice Girls. Kimble is trying to use as many media outlets as are available, including local news sources and the popular social networking site Facebook, to spread the word that she wants to meet the Spice Girls.
"I'm just hoping that someone will know someone who will know someone that could help me," she said.
Kimble was finally able to see the Spice Girls in concert in Las Vegas on the weekend of Dec. 7-9. She had bought tickets when she first found out about the reunion tour over the summer, not knowing that they would be performing in Michigan at the Palace of Auburn Hills as well. She will attend that show on Feb. 18 also, along with her brother, and will hopefully meet the girls.
"Since they will be in Michigan, I feel like I will never have this chance again," said Kimble on her dream to meet the Spice Girls. "I am campaigning any way I can to meet them."
Kimble created a Facebook group, "Please Help Me MEET the Spice Girls!," to try and gain recognition of her cause. In the group, she simply requests that people join, and if they have the time, to send an email to Oprah, Ellen, or Rachael Ray. As of Jan. 20, she had gained the support of 463 people.
She has also contacted local radio stations with her plea, but to no avail.
"Friends and I took this as something funny at first, but they are so supportive and encouraged me to try and meet them; this has turned into something a little more serious for me now," Kimble said. "As a little girl they were so inspiring with their 'Girl Power' movement and I always wanted to meet them. When they broke up, I thought I wouldn't have ever have the chance, but now it's here. Meeting them now would just bring a little more closure to that whole episode of my life."
Kimble said that she would most like to meet Sporty Spice, aka Melanie C., because she used to relate to her the most.
"If I meet them, it would just be great to thank them for writing such amazing music and being awesome role models - and maybe get a picture!"
