Cardinals outshot by Huskies in Saturday's loss
January 15, 2008 —
One of the best defensive teams in the GLIAC, the Michigan Tech Huskies, found themselves in a shootout in O'Neill Areana on Saturday.
The Cardinals were able to put up 71 points against a 13-3, 5-1 (GLIAC) Huskies team who had only let up 54 points per game coming in. However, it wasn't enough as the Huskies showed their offensive prowess - especially from three point range - edging the Cards 77-71.
The Huskies hit 11 three pointers, seven of them coming in the first half in which they pounced on the Cards with a 21-9 run, and shot 66 percent from the field.
Going into halftime down 47-34, the Cardinals were able to stage a comeback in the second half, outscoring the Huskies 37-30, behind 16 second half points from senior forward and Cardinals leading scorer LaTille Ross. She would finish with a game high 23 points.
They would draw within four points with 19 seconds left in the second half when senior guard Kara Kinzer hit a heavily -contested three pointer from the top of the key. It was the second of her two three pointers. She would finish with 12 points.
However, being forced into an intentional foul situation, the Cardinals put Huskies sophomore forward Kaite Wysocky on the line where she would seal victory for Tech by converting on two free throws.
The Cardinals were hit by three second half three pointers from Huskie guard Katie Zimmerman. Her 12 second half points helped keep the Cardinals at arms length.
Senior guard Tricia Everett had another strong game at the point, tallying 14 assists, one shy of the school record which she set earlier this season against Tiffin. It was her third double digit assist night of the season. She is averaging a GLIAC best 6.38 assists per game. She is also currently sitting tenth in the nation in assists.
Ross's 23 points added to her team high 16 points per game. She, along with freshman forward Brittany Burkhardt, lead the team with 7.8 rebounds per game.
The loss to Tech drops the Cardinals record to 6-8, 1-5 (GLIAC).
The Cards have a busy upcoming week. They open on Monday by traveling to Ohio to take on Central State for a rematch against the Marauders, who they beat in 72-51 in November. Then, the Cards will come home on Thursday to face off against Northwood. Both games are set to tipoff at 6 p.m.
Saturday, the Cardinals will travel back to Ohio to take on Tiffin in a rematch against the Dragons, who the Cardinals beat 65-50 on Dec. 1 in the game in which Everett set the single game assist record.. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
