Many say a picture is worth a thousand words and two SVSU graduates are holding that statement true.

Stephanie Acker and Jennifer Fallon, both Saginaw natives, recently displayed their artwork at the Bachelor of Fine Arts Show, held in SVSU's art gallery. Both photography majors, the two say they have always enjoyed art, but became interested in pursuing a degree in photography after taking an introductory course in the field.

Fallon said the knowledge she has gained at SVSU has encouraged her to continue photography after graduation.

"I have gained a lot of knowledge and hope to someday make a career out of it," she said.

Acker feels there is more to photography than just the picture. She enjoys adding an artistic feel to all of her work.

"My favorite style of photography includes a mixed media," she said. "It blends the medias and causes them to become more versatile."

The SVSU senior had second thoughts about the major earlier in her college career because she wanted to not only major in photography, but also in graphic design.

"I ended up taking a lot of extra graphic design classes," she said. "These skills aren't wasted. They will help me in the future making things such as brochures and business cards."

Acker already has a kick start to her career, owning a fine art and photography business called Studio 37. Although she is still new at the experience, she has already taken pictures for weddings and infants. She said her photography style allows her to add something special to her portraits.

"I would like to continue making artwork to display in galleries, but I think I'm going to stick with this," she said. "I like to add a more artistic style to photos and not make them look as commercialized."

Both Fallon and Acker say they have enjoyed their experience with the Bachelor of Fine Arts program at SVSU.

"The faculty allowed me to have my own sense of style," Acker said. "They gave me a lot of independence and allowed me to explore my ideas."

The newest photographers are graduating this month and will be looking ahead to see where photography will lead them.

At the beginning of next year, two more students graduating with the same degree will also showcase their work in the gallery.
