When the Cardinals skated off the ice Saturday night, they had their second win of the weekend, and maintained a safe position in first place of the ACHA North Division.

With a strong start in the first period Friday night against Lawrence Tech, they held onto the lead with the first goal scored by junior forward Jake Trombley, assisted by defensive sophomore Pat Miller on a power play. Freshman forward Brandon Clary took several good shots, then scored the second goal of the game assisted by freshman forward Billy Tarolli and freshman forward Alex Lajoie.

Saginaw kept Lawrence Tech off the scoreboard until halfway into the second period. Sophomore forward Jon Tibaudo's shorthanded goal was followed by a power-play goal by Lawrence Tech, leaving the score at 3-1. Senior goalie Brad Altenbernt managed to block a few breakaway shots, but the Blue Devils caught up tying the game at 3-3.

"It's almost like we toyed with them," explained forward freshman Brandon Clary who had scored the Cardinals' second goal. "It was 3-0 then we gave them back the game."

At the start of the third period, junior forward Matt Fogal scored, breaking the tie with assists by freshman forward Chris Tibaudo and sophomore defenseman Pat Miller.

A penalty by Miller for misconduct led to a power-play goal by the Blue Devils, tying the game once again at 4-4.

Defensive freshman Kaleb Grapp stepped up and scored the winning goal, back hand into the top corner with just over three minutes left in the game, assisted by Fogal and junior forward Doug Greene.

"Doug made a nice play carrying it into the zone," Grapp explained of Greene's assist. "He dropped it to Fogal who dropped it to me; I saw a spot and put it in there."

Saturday's game against Lake Superior State University started out slow with no score after the first period. At the start of the second, a Laker penalty led to a power-play goal by Grapp assisted by Chris Tibaudo.

Lake Superior came right back and joined the Cardinals on the scoreboard just four minutes later when they too took a power-play goal after Jon Tibaudo was put in the box for tripping.

Grapp scored his second goal of the game late in the second period assisted by Chris Tibaudo, breaking the 1-1 tie.

"It was a nice faceoff win," explained Grapp. "I picked it up and put it in."

Freshman goalie Alan Fritch helped keep the Cardinals lead throughout the third period. With 2:11 left in the game, the Lakers managed to tie the game once again with a power-play goal after a holding penalty by Miller.

The game went into overtime as the teams went four-on-four. 45 seconds after the start of the overtime, the Cardinals came together as Greene scored ending the game.

"We could do a lot better, it wasn't our full potential," Greene said. "We came together at the right point."
