New parliamentarian appointed
Parliamentarian Mari Pionk resigns, Jeremy Jones appointed as successor
November 12, 2007 —
Student Association has appointed representative Jeremy Jones as a its new parliamentarian. The appointment came in the wake of previous parliamentarian Mari Pionk resignation.
Jones, an education senior, says he believes his time in SA, and through a stint as a student representative on the Linden community school board has helped prepare him for the position.
"I learned parliamentarian procedure during my time as a student rep on the school board," Jones said. "I feel I have the experience needed for the position, as well as an advocacy for informing the students about politics."
Despite only being in SA for a short period of time, Jones says though events like Battle of the Valleys he's been able to show his leadership abilities. He feels that, coupled with an eagerness to serve in the position, has given him enough experience for the job.
"I know that I am new to the association this year, however, I do feel I have enough experience for the position," Jones said. "My leadership qualities have been reflected in motivating people to help with Battle of the Valleys."
Jones hopes to his time as parliamentarian - the position that chairs SA's legislative committee - to educate students on political issues, especially with the upcoming election year.
"I feel it is very important to inform students, especially with it being an election year," Jones said. "I think this committee has a chance to do great things."
To do this, Jones says he wants to put on several events focusing on the elections, and giving students information about issues and candidates.
"Events like debates surrounding all ends of the political spectrum, and stressing the importance of student voting are some of the things I'd like to see happen," Jones said.
Pionk, who resigned at last Monday's house meeting, did so because of a position she has accepted at a law firm. SA then appointed Jones later in the meeting, after being nominated by other members of the house. It was the second time this year Jones has been up for appointment.
"Politics is something I've always been interested in," Jones said during the meeting. "Parliamentarian procedure is an interest of mine."
Jones will have his first chance to exercise that interest during the next SA house meeting, which will take place on Monday, Nov. 19 at 10 p.m. in the Alumni Lounge.
All house meetings are open to the public.
