Support staff negotiations continue in light of picket
October 29, 2007 —
The Support Staff Assocation and SVSU's administration are still searching for common ground.
SSA, a union of SVSU's non-administrative and non-faculty employees, began picketing Oct. 3 for a new contract and will present its side in a fact-finding hearing this Thursday at 10 a.m. at a location to be announced early this week.
SSA has not had a contract renewal since 2003, and is hoping for changes in promotion processes and discipline as well as a pay raise. Ann Garcia, president of the union, said money is the biggest issue, stating that every other employee group on campus has received an increase annually. Progress, she says, has been slow.
The university will present information supporting their contract language and economic proposals.
A third party fact-finder will offer non-binding recommendations a month or two after the discussion, the groups will then attempt to reach a settlement.
"It is our hope that at that time both parties quickly come to a mutually satisfactory agreement," Vice President of Business Affairs Jim Muladore said.
