Theatre club set to debut a new Wonder
Cast describes play as a 'dark comedy,' debut set for Nov. 2
October 29, 2007 —
The SVSU theatre group Work N' Progress is currently undertaking a new performance called Wonder of the World.
Wonder of the World is a comedy written by David Lindsay-Abaire, about a woman named Cass who leaves her husband due to marital problems to go out on a journey around the world to find herself. Bethany Champion, a criminal justice and theatre senior, is the one who portrays the lead role of Cass in the play.
"I would say her husband divulges a secret that unhinges her," Champion said.
Patrick Konesko, a theatre senior, is the play's director. He said that Work N' Progress' interpretation of Wonder of the World is going to take a dark comedic approach.
"It's a hilarious play. It's really nonstop humor throughout the entire thing. I've taken it more in the direction of a dark, realistic comedy," Konesko said.
The student group not only chooses which plays they are going to perform, but members of the group are also in charge of building sets, putting together costumes, and accumulating funds. Despite Champion being busy with the lead role in the play, she is also involved in the production of the play as well.
"We do try to designate the tasks to make it like it would be in a real production company," Champion said. "But it's usually just time constraints that everybody kind of ends up helping with everything and doing everything."
In addition to technical preparation, there also exists the task of rehearsal, which Konesko said has always been a vital component to delivering a good performance.
"We've been rehearsing two to three times a week for the past month," Konesko said. "We go into a more rigorous practice schedule in this last week as we're trying to put together technical aspects of the show."
The revenue generated from Wonder of the World will be put toward a fund used to pay for t-shirts featuring the Work N' Progress logo. The group is still undergoing a certain level of formalization and is still gaining recognition.
"It's about getting the word out," Champion said, "Because not a lot of people know about the organization or they think you have to be involved in the theatre department to be involved in Work N' Progress."
Members of the group will perform Wonder of the World on Nov. 2 and 3, both days at 7:30 p.m in the Black Box theatre in Curtiss 180.
There are 85 seats available both nights. The performances are $5 at the door but tickets can also be purchased at the theatre department's office in Curtiss 184.
