Cards drop Knights, remain in three way tie for first
October 29, 2007 —
The Cardinals held onto second place Saturday night after their game against Calvin College. Despite the lack of student fans to cheer them on, the team pushed forward and beat Calvin with a final score of 5-2.
Sophomore forward Jon Tibaudo scored the team's first goa, unassisted within the first few minutes of the first period. Shortly after, junior forward Doug Greene brought the score up 2-0, on a goal assisted by senior foward Nate Engstrom and junior forward Jake Trombley.
Through the rest of the first period, SVSU freshman goalie Alan Fritch kept the team in the lead saving shot after shot taken by Calvin. With just over six minutes left in the first period, the Knights managed to slip one past Fritch, leaving the score at 2-1.
An interference penalty by Calivn's Jeff Dekorne led to a Saginaw power play goal by Trombley in the middle of the second period, giving the Cardinals a 3-1 lead. Trombley's goal was assisted by Tibaudo and Greene.
Penalties in the second period seemed to be a problem for the Cardinals. Tibaudo was in the box for four consecutive minutes for interference, while teammate Mike Miller was out at the same time for tripping. The three-on-five advantage was not a problem for the Cards until Calvin scored once more with 5:44 left in the second.
The Cards held their own throughout the third period with good overall defense and continuous blocked shots by Fritch. Miller scored Saginaw's fourth goal shorthanded at 18:03 in the third, assisted by freshman forward Brandon Clary.
Tibaudo found himself in the box once again with a tripping penalty giving Calvin a power play, but the Knights couldn't convert.
The Cardinals kept their lead as freshman defender Kaleb Grapp scored the last and final goal of the night, assisted by sophomore forward Chris Landrith and freshman forward Rick Rodriguez.
The win kept the Cardinals in a three way tie for first in the American Collegiate Hockey Association's North Division. SVSU, Grand Valley and Lansing Community College all have 14 points on the year.
The Cardinals will remain within the comfy confinds of Bay Ice Arena as their long home stand continues Wednesday when they take on Northwood University at 7 p.m. The game is the third in a nine game homestand for the Cardinals. Admission to the game is $1.
