Vote "yes" on Bay County library millage

submitted by Nicholas Madaj

Letter to the Editor

Since some of the readers of the Valley Vanguard are residents of Bay County, I encourage these readers to vote "yes" on the Bay County Library System millage request on Tuesday, November 6, 2007.

A "yes" vote would provide about three million dollars in revenue for the operation of the Library System. This is significant because it would allow many of the branches to remain open for longer periods of time. Also, the Library System would be able to restore many of the programs that were cut after the last millage request failed.

A "yes" vote is important to the kids, adults, seniors, students, and all others that use the libraries to further educational or research goals.

A "yes" vote is important for the future of the Library System itself. Dedicated state revenue and the System's search for a new library director are potentially at risk if this millage request fails.

A "yes" vote is important to the community. People and businesses look to a community's educational commitment when considering where to locate.

Of course, many issues and feelings remain in the county about how the renovation and construction of the libraries have occurred. However, there are other methods that are more appropriate to show these concerns. To vote "no" on the library millage request makes as much sense as buying a new car and refusing to pay for the gas.

Please remember to vote "yes" on the library millage request on November 6.
