Men's team breaks all-time win record
October 22, 2007 —
The men's soccer team broke SVSU's all-time win record in a thrilling sudden death victory over the Findlay Oilers on Sunday, winning 2-1 thanks largely to sophomore forward Brennan MacMillan's heroics.
MacMillan netted SVSU's first goal at the 41-minute mark off of junior forward Brent Walker's corner kick to take an early lead, before Findlay evened the score early in the second half. But after regulation, MacMillan struck again on another assist from Walker, ending the game and sending the Cards home 2-1 victors and owners of the best record in team history.
Senior keeper Nick Kohn was the other story of the match, letting in one goal but stopping six shots on goal. The Oilers' offense kept Kohn on his toes the whole game, firing off 25 shots, compared to SVSU's 12. The Oilers also put the ball in front of the net more frequently than the Cards, who only managed four shots on goal, two of which found the back of the net.
SVSU, which now stands at 9-6-1 overall and 6-2-1 in the GLIAC, has posted the best record in school history, and a considerable improvement over last year's disastrous 4-14 campaign, which followed a dismal 3-11-2 2005. Most impressively, SVSU is sitting in second in the GLIAC behind 8-1 Gannon.
The team's 2007 campaign is the squad's first winning season since 2005. Several players have stood out, although the team's success has been largely a team effort. Leading up to and through the Findlay game, the Cards had scored a cumulative 35 goals, spread among 11 players. Last year, the team only scored 21 goals overall, and only eight players contributed.
The Cards have one more conference game remaining against Northwood, and two non-conference games against Rochester College and Seton Hill before and after the GLIAC matchup Findlay, 1-7, is the only GLIAC team to possess a win over conference leaders Gannon. Seton Hill, 8-9-2, lost 2-1 to Gannon earlier in the season.
The Cards finish the season with a three-game homestand. The last game of the season kicks off at 5 p.m. next Monday.
