Cardinals fall at home, now tied for first

When Cardinals took the ice Saturday night, they were looking to put some distance in the standings between them and Lansing Community College. Instead, they now find themselves tied for first.

After a 6-2 start, SVSU found themselves alone in first place, with 12 points in the American Collegiate Hockey Association's North Division. After Saturday's loss, they are now tied for first with Lansing

The Cards found themselves up early, after goals by sophomore forward Jonathan Tibaudo and freshman defenseman Kaleb Grapp, both coming at 10:10 and 5:24 in the first, respectively.

However, a Lansing goal off a strange bounce in front of the net brought them back with in one, leaving the score 2-1 at the end of the first.

SVSU continued to play strong for most of the second period. Despite spending a lot of time in their own end, senior goalie Brad Altenbernt was able to stave off Lansing's attack for the much of the period. It wasn't until the final three minutes that Lansing was able to put two passed SVSU, both coming within 20 seconds of each other.

SVSU responded quickly, however, when freshman forward Chris Tibaudo scored a minute later, leaving the game in a 3-3 tie going into the final period.

Less than a minute into the third, Lansing scored on another strange bounce in front of the net, giving them a 4-3 lead.

SVSU had an opportunity to respond when sophomore forward Mike Miller found some open ice with a breakaway chance midway through the third, but was turned away by Lansing goalie, freshman Mike Shaffer.

Lansing would score twice more, giving them a 6-3 lead. However, the Cards still had a little fight left in them, getting power play goals from junior forward Matt Fogal, and Jonathan Tibaudo. They were able to keep the pressure on Lansing after emptying their net and bringing in an extra attacker. It wouldn't be enough, though, as the time expired.

SVSU (6-3) will continue their lengthy homestand - of which they have seven more consecutive games in Bay Ice Arena - next Saturday against Calvin College (0-4). The puck is set to drop at 9:00 p.m.
