Students urged not to smoke

Letter to the Editor

People of SVSU: Anyone that is reading this that smokes or knows someone that smokes, I have a story for you.

My grandfather was 77 years old and he used to smoke. Even though he has not smoked in thirty years, a little over a month ago, my grandfather was diagnosed it lung cancer, emphysema, and had only twenty percent of lung capacity left. The masses of cancer were seven centimeters in one and a smaller sized mass in the other lung.

On Monday, he was rushed to the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. Yeah, I know that you are probably thinking that this is another story to tell you or someone you know to stop smoking, but it is not. I want to tell you how your body cannot recover from smoking.

According to the American Heart Association, the body takes two weeks to recover after one week of smoking.

People, listen: smoking is not something that you do because you might think that it is "cool," or it helps relieve stress. Yeah, smoking might make you cool for a little while, and it might take the edge off from stress, but do you realize what you are doing to your body?

I am not writing to tell you to stop because it is your choice. But I just hope that you or someone you know realizes the damage that is being done inside the body.

Some say that if you can't see it, it can't hurt you, but it does. My grandfather is the proof for me.

People, please rethink your decisions about smoking.
