Coffeehouse continues in Cage
September 24, 2007 —
Wednesday's Coffeehouse series provided more to SVSU students than just music and refreshments. The event also brought a positive attitude.
The first act, The Confidence, featured brothers Ryan Badgerow and Ron Badgerow. The two used their music to create a relaxing atmosphere for the students to enjoy. With songs such as "Small Town" the duo developed a message about equality and the ways in which we are all alike.
Singing since they were young, the Badgerow brothers have always enjoyed using music to impact the lives of others.
"We like to be around people," Ryan said. "We don't want [people] to think of us as rock stars, but more as friends."
They chose their name, The Confidence, because it reflects a positive way of thinking about life. Using this as a way to reach others, their passion is evident in the way the brothers speak about their performances.
"We play to have fun," Ron said. "SVSU had a cool crowd."
Growing up in a Christian family with parents who are both musicians has influenced the way the brothers have chosen to approach the coffeehouse scene.
"We like to share our story," Ryan said.
Following the scheduled acts was an open mic. As time slots opened up, Delta student Ben Nolan decided to step on stage. Following the same trend as the Badgerow brothers, Nolan played for the love of music. He looks at performing as more of a passion than work.
Nolan heard about the coffeehouse series through a friend, Nate Bade, an SVSU student who played at the event last semester. Nolan understood the atmosphere that the coffeehouse brings to campus. This is the reason he came to the Cardinal Cage, after putting on a show a few hours before at The Harvest in Frankenmuth.
Just as the Badgerow brothers were influenced by their parents, Nolan was inspired by his family as well.
"I've been interested in music since I was 13 years old," Nolan said. "My mother and grandfather have been the biggest influences in my life."
Other artists played on Wednesday night and the students took it all in at once. These musicians only experienced a few minutes of fame at SVSU, but they made a positive impact on their audience. They left a piece of their positive attitude on SVSU's campus.
The next Coffeehouse will be Wednesday, Oct. 10 in the Cardinal Cage.
