Spikers roll thru Midwest
September 10, 2007 —
Cardinal volleyball has exploded in the opening leg of the 2007 season, notching 11 victories while dropping only two decisions to non-conference competition.
The dominating performance of the team is a confidence boost to a squad that went 14-13 overall last year, while placing sixth in the GLIAC with a 6-12 record.
Leading the team's offense are retruning sophomore Allison Schlinkert and returning junior Sarah Redoute (pictured).
Redoute leads the offense with 101 kills, while Schlinkert trails close behind with a second-place 81 kills.
On defense, returning junior Carmen Schacher leads with 126 digs, averaging an impressive four digs per game. Returning junior Kelsey Rabish trails close behind with 84 digs.
But individual stats aside, thie team as a whole must perform markedly better to avoid repeating the heartbreak of last season.
As of press time, stats were not available for the wins against Ohio Valley and LaMoyne (New York) that the Cards recorded Saturday at the Mercyhurst invitational.
The Cards won the first game 30-26, 30-24 and 30-15 against Ohio Valley, and rolled through LaMoyne, winning three straight games by the scores of 30-23, 30-18, and 30-20.
After the annual alumni match tomorrow, the Cards will face their first GLIAC opposition away at Wayne State. After that, the Cards travel to Hillsdale before hosting their first home games against division rivals Northwood, Grand Valley, and Ferris.
