Rudey wins Northwood XC invite; 6 men finish in top 10
September 10, 2007 —
Senior Becca Rudey claimed first for the women's cross country team at the Northwood Invitational last Friday, posting a time of 18:36.67, over 32 seconds faster than the second-place finisher in the 5k race. The win is Rudey's second in a row; she also placed first at the SVSU invite on Aug. 31 (pictured) with a time of 18:57. Her time at the Northwood invite reflects and improvement of over 21 seconds.
Rudey won an all-conference spot in 2006, and is looking to repeat her performance from last year. And she will need to - the next best SVSU finish at Northwood was sophomore Amber Caitlin in third place with a time of 19:18.09, almost 45 seconds behind Rudey's pace.
The men placed six runners in the top 10 at Northwood. Placing second was sophomore Steve Genther, who ran unattached and finished with a time of 26:36.10 in the eight-kilometer race. This is Genther's second year running with the Cards, albeit unattached.
Jared Kelsh of Ferris State took first at the meet, finishing with a time of 26:10.38. Ferris placed three runners in the top ten at the invite.
Of the other five SVSU runners who finished in the top five, senior Nick Krus placed third with a time of 26:41.89. Sophomore Cortland Seaver, running unattached, placed fifth with a time of 26:55.90. Brandon Johnson, also running unattached, recorded a time of 26:58.54, netting him seventh place. Sophomore Derek Stone, another unattached runner, crossed the finish line with a time of 27:10.84. Junior Len Weddel rounded out the top 10 with a time of 27:15.20.
The women aslo peppered the top ten, placing four runners. Besides Caitlin and Rudey, sophomores Maggie Stalker and Nicole Schmidt placed fourth and fifth, respectively, finishing with times of 19:26.49 and 19:43.83.
The next men's and women's cross country invitational will be held at Michigan State on Sept. 14.
