Cage refit nearing finish as bank moves in
June 25, 2007 —
At the end of last semester, students expressed some concern over what the Cardinal Cage would look like if Independent Bank moved its branch from Wickes Hall to the Student Life center.
Many students were upset by the announcement of the move, claiming that there should have been more notice given. Construction was supposed to start last semester, but was pushed back until summer so the Cage could be fully used by students for the remainder of the semester.
A recent walkthrough of the Cage with Jerry Stuart, Director of Construction, has shown that while some space may have been lost, the student space will still function.
The Cage will still have one of the original big screen TVs and two flat screen TVs have been donated by Independent Bank. The old TV is going up by the brick wall where there is currently a small TV hanging from the ceiling. The two flat screen TVs will be on the bank's outer wall that faces into the Cage.
There will still be computer access via a four-person kiosk set up around the column where pingpong balls are currently available.
The Cage and the game area will receive new carpet and new seating.
"We haven't ordered the seating yet," Stuart said. "It's going to be soft seating, comfortable seating."
The current stage and countertops that look into the Cage will be taken out and replaced with railings. A wheelchair lift will also be installed with the railings.
A portable stage has been ordered for use in the Cage. It comes in sections, allowing the size of the stage to be flexible.
Lighting is going to stay the same with the exception of the stage's lighting, which will move.
"There is some stage lighting there that we will move a little so it will work with the location of the stage," Stuart said.
The game room will mainly consist of a pool table and some pingpong tables.
"We are buying a brand new, full size pool table," Stuart said. "And then they are going to keep the pingpong tables."
The bank branch will be 1024 square feet and will consist of three teller stations, an office, and an ATM.
The ATM will be located outside of the bank, next to the RFoC windows. SVSU is removing the current ATMs in Wickes Hall and the Student Center. Stuart said there is talk of putting an ATM in the Ryder Center, but nothing is official yet.
Due to the ATM being removed from Wickes Hall, the black cash box where residential students load money onto their cards for laundry will move next to the new ATM.
Independent Bank wanted to move to the Student Center because of the higher traffic flow and because other universities have their bank branch in their student centers or unions.
