Women win eleven events, men take nine at Northwood Open

A freshman and a senior thrower for the SVSU track team had performances on Saturday at the Northwood Open in Midland that will impact the rest of their seasons.
Freshman Josh Koglin qualified for June's U.S. Junior Nationals by throwing the 6K hammer a distance of 52.57 meters. With the distance, he finished second in the field.
Senior Ashley Bishop, meanwhile, improved her provisional marks in the shot put (14.08 meters) and the hammer throw (51.12). Both distances earned her first-place finishes, and she also took the discus throw with a distance of 39.22 meters.
Bishop had three of the women's team's 11 top finishes. Freshman Megan Willemsen took first in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dash with times of 12.48 and 25.12 seconds, respectively. She and Bishop weren't the only ones with multiple firsts, either, as senior Mandie Gallier won both the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles with times of 15.11 and 1:01.71.
The Cards' "A" team won both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Sophomore Sjonne Mitchell, junior Brittany Gendron, freshman Najiba Gaines-Hanna, and Willemsen took the 4x100 in 48.92 seconds, while senior Lisa Fair, junior Courtney Kotewa, Gendron, and Gallier won the 4x400 in 4:03.34.
Sophomore Nicole Schmidt won the 1500-meter in 4:41.64, and junior Jenny Phelan rounded out the first-place Cardinals by winning the 5000-meter in 19:22.16.
The men, meanwhile, were led by sophomore Sean Egan. He won the shot put with a distance of 15.48 meters and took the discus throw with 42.03 meters.
Senior Chris Baranek won the 400-meter dash in 49.03 seconds, while junior Nick Krus dominated the 3000-meter steeplechase, winning by almost 46 seconds with a time of 9:41.54.
Sophomores Sam Tilmon and Charlie Richards won the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles, respectively, finishing in 15.60 and 54.91 seconds.
The "A" team of freshmen Ryan Irwin and Tony Filipek, Tilmon, and Baranek won the 4x400 in 3:22.73.
Junior Eltaro Hooper won the long jump by leaping 6.74 meters, while fellow junior Tony McDaniel rounded out the winners by throwing the javelin 53.45 meters.
The Cards' next meet is the Hillsdale College Invitational, scheduled for Thursday through Saturday.
