SVSU student wins D.C. internship
April 23, 2007 —
Political science senior Christine Macey worked in the state capitol as an intern for the U.S. House of Representatives last summer. Now she is moving to the nation's capital for the "internship of her dreams."
Macey is one of two students in the nation selected for a summer internship with the United States Supreme Court.
"There is such a draw for me to the Supreme Court. There is no institution that I admire more," she said. "This is the internship of my dreams."
Macey, who hails from Durand, will leave for Washington, D.C. in the middle of May and return in mid-August. Macey may return to Washington shortly thereafter, as she will be attending law school at either Georgetown University or the University of Michigan.
Macey's duties for the Court will include performing research on foreign dignitaries that visit, assisting in developing speeches for Chief Justice John Roberts, summarizing news articles, and handling memoranda.
Macey received a phone call Wednesday evening telling her she had been hired. She had been told earlier in the week that she was among five finalists and would be notified soon whether or not she was chosen.
"When I got the phone call, I knew it was going to be yes or no, so that edge was taken off," she said. "It was just, 'okay, what is it?' Then when he told me, I was very internally excited. But it wasn't so much of a shock because I was expecting a result. It was like, 'OK, now I have to tell everybody.'"
Despite her impressive credentials, Macey said she was relatively uneasy about her interview. She felt she answered some questions well, including how she would handle doing research for a commencement address by Chief Justice Roberts.
Beyond the novelty of being a Supreme Court intern, Macey said she looks forward to working in an atmosphere that she hopes will motivate her in law school this fall, as well as meeting the workers, attorneys, and justices.
"And I don't mean that in a 'Oh-I'm-going-to-get-all-of-these-connections way,'" she said. "I want to meet all those people who can share their experiences with me."
