Graham's job set for this year
February 26, 2007 —
Even though there was some uncertainty several months ago, Bill Graham is the Cardinals' softball coach this season. But that's about all he or anyone else can say for sure right now.
Last year's coach, Sabrina Lane, stepped down Sept. 13 to accept the head coaching job at Division I Saint Francis University located in Loretto, Pennsylvania.
A search for a new head coach began, and Graham was given the job in the interim.
Eventually, Graham was told he would coach the team this season, ending the doubt in the Cardinals players' minds about how long their coach would be their coach.
When he told the team he would be here for the whole season, "you could see the look of relief on their faces," he says. "The kids were happy when they found out I was here for this year, and the parents were happy when they found out. So we'll just go out and play this year for this year."
Graham was an assistant for Lane for three years and also has assisted with the baseball team. He has spent the last 15 years coaching in some capacity.
"It's not so much on me, because no matter what happens to me, I'm going to be alright," he says. "My concern has always been for the girls. I just want them to know what's going on."
Everything is especially uncertain because of the status of the athletic director post. Mike Watson begins as the new AD today, and will probably see the season out before making a decision on Graham's job future.
"As for what happens after the season, I don't know what's going to happen," Graham says. "I've been told they will do another job search, which is fine. Obviously, it's their choice."
Graham adds that all he can concern himself with is what he can control, "which is coming here every day and teaching the girls. All I can do is give them the best preparation I can, and the chips will fall where they may."
