Track teams both place fourth

SVSU men and women's track teams combined for 20 top-five finishes over the weekend at the 2007 GLIAC Indoor Track & Field Championship. Both teams took fourth place out of a field of eight.

The Championship was the last indoor meet of the season before the Cardinals gear up for the NCAA Division II National Indoor Championship in Boston.

Senior Ashley Bishop, who will be competing in Boston, was the tour-de-force as she finished third in both the shot put and weight throw, with distances of 43 feet, 11.25 inches and 56 feet, 4.5 inches, respectively.

In the women's 5000 meter, junior Becca Rudey took a second place finish with a time of 17 minutes, 24.75 seconds.

Sophomore sprinter Sjonne Mitchell finished fifth in the women's 55-meter dash with a final time of 7.39 seconds.

In the 55-meter hurdles, junior Leighann Dowell took fifth place with a time of 8.52 seconds.

Sophomore runner Jessica Sweeney took a fourth-place finish in the 800 meter with a time of 2 minutes, 17.8 seconds.

The women's 4x400 meter relay team, consisting of juniors Britanny Gendron, Courtney Kotewa, and sophomores Jessica Sweeney and Ashely Morrow, finished fourth with a time of 4 minutes, 2.6 seconds.

Sweeney remained active during the meet, as she and the rest of the women's distance medley team, which also included Ashley Morrow, sophomore Nicole Schmidt and freshman Jackie Reder, finished third with a final time of 12 minutes, 19.34 seconds.

The men fared particularly well in the 3000 meter, as junior Nick Krus took first, and senior Greg Schmit took second, with respective times of 8 minutes, 36.57 seconds and 8 minutes, 38.79 seconds.

Krus also finished well in the 5000 meter, notching a fifth place finish with a time of 15 minutes, 8.9 seconds.

In the men's 55-meter hurdles, sophomore Sam Tilmon took third place, notching a final time of 7.8 seconds. Senior sprinter Chris Baranek finished second in the 55-meter dash, with a time of 6.5 seconds.

Baranek was also active throughout the meet, as he and the rest of the SVSU men's 4x400 meter relay team, comprised of sophomore Charlie Richards, and freshmen Ryan Irwin and Anthony Filipek, finished third place with a time of 3 minutes, 24.49 seconds.

Richards and Irwin also joined freshman Ben Richards and sophomore Len Weddel to finish third in the men's distance medley, with a time of 10 minutes, 22.09 seconds.

Junior jumper Joe Dugall took a third place finish in the men's high jump with a height of 6 feet, 6.25 inches.

In the triple jump event, junior Eltaro Hooper placed second with a distance of 45 feet, 1.75 inches.

Sophomore Sean Egan took a fourth place finish in the shot put, with a final distance of 50 feet, 9.50 seconds.

Kyle McDaniel, a sophomore, took second in the men's pole vault, notching a height of 15 feet, 1.5 inches.

The NCAA Division II National Indoor Championship will take place March 9 and 10. Events will commence 1:00 p.m. on Friday and pick back up at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
