Cards win with dramatic breakaway

SVSU hockey must love drama.

In a game that featured more plot twists than an M. Night Shyamalan movie, the SVSU Club Hockey Team certainly showed its flare for the dramatic in a 5-4 overtime victory against Lake Superior State Saturday to improve its record to 15-11.

Senior forward Ryan Michaels kept the Cardinals one step ahead of Lake State with a tremendous four-goal effort, including two short-handed goals in the first period, and the game winner as the buzzer sounded in overtime.

"The two short handed [goals] were a little lucky," Michaels said. "But you have to take what you can get."

With the absence of leading scorer Jon Tibaudo, Michaels took advantage of nearly ever opportunity given to him, and with time winding down in overtime, he didn't miss his final chance.

"He's one of the leading point scorers in the league," coach Steve Hart said. "We missed Jon's effort, so I'm glad with what we got from Ryan tonight."

Hart also lauded Michaels work ethic.

"On his second goal, he gave a third and fourth effort, and on the fourth effort he put it between the pipes," Hart said.

Freshman goalie Kevin Moore also played well in his first start of the year, taking the place of incumbent starter senior Brad Altenbernt. Despite SVSU taking several penalties in the third period, including a 10-minute misconduct in the period's waning moments called on captain Jake Trombley, Moore was able to stave off the Lakers' power play long enough to take the game into overtime. "We're taking more penalties than we need," Moore said. "Considering we were in the box half the game, I'm glad we were able to pull it out."

Moore, who joined the team at the start of the semester, finally got his chance, taking over for Altenbernt half way through Friday night's 8-4 loss to Lake State. He was excited about his first start.

"I was pumped to be able to play for these guys," Moore said. "I was happy they brought me on the team. They're all nice guys and good hockey players, when we come to play."

Trombley scored on an odd bounce from center ice at 17:32 in the third period to put the team up 4-3, but his costly penalty left the Cards shorthanded again. But Hart again said he was proud of the way his team stepped up.

"The refs were calling it tight, but called a pretty good game," he said. "But those are situations that you've got to tighten up the bench and get the right personnel on the ice to do the job and get it done, and that's what they did."
