Win over Northwood keeps women in final postseason tournament spot

With a tough remaining schedule, the SVSU women's basketball team needed a win Saturday night to maintain its playoff position. Jenna Schroeder made sure the Lady Cards got it.

Schroeder, a junior guard, scored 22 points in playing the entire game as she led her team to a 56-48 win at Northwood. The win put SVSU's conference record at 6-8, one game ahead of 5-9 Ashland.

SVSU took the lead with 1:39 remaining in the first half and controlled all of the second half to beat the Timberwolves, who dropped to 3-11 in the conference. Schroeder kept her team alive in the first half, scoring 13 of the Lady Cards' 29 first-half points.

With a chance to put the game away in the second half, SVSU shot just 30 percent from the field. The Lady Cards' defense was the difference, though, as they held the Wolves to just 28 percent shooting after a 48 percent performance in the first half.

The Lady Cards' foul shooting aided their cause, as well. SVSU shot 17-of-26, just 65 percent, from the line. It was much better than Northwood, though, as the Timberwolves shot just 7-of-18, or 39 percent, from the line.

Schroeder was on the floor all night along with guards Brittany Burns, who scored nine points, and Tricia Everett, who added nine points, four assists, and three rebounds.

Junior LaTille Ross, who last week was selected GLIAC North Player of the Week, provided her seventh double-double of the season and third in four games with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Fellow junior Kali Briggs came off the bench to grab 10 rebounds.

Two former Lady Cards combined for 17 points. Lisa Collison shot 3-of-7 from three-point range and scored 11 points, while Sara Bilunes hit two three pointers, both in the first half. Megan Starnes led Northwood with 12 points and added five rebounds.

SVSU needed the win, as the schedule for the rest of the season is not easy. On Wednesday, the Lady Cards travel to Lake Superior State, which beat SVSU 73-57 on Feb. 3 and already has clinched a playoff birth.

SVSU then goes to Detroit on Saturday to play Wayne State, sitting seventh in the conference with an 8-6 record.
