SVSU choir to perform Christmas concert

SVSU will present its annual holiday concert Saturday, Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Rhea Miller Recital Hall. The theme for this year's performance is "Christmas Varieties," and the concert will feature SVSU choirs and instruments.

Selections include Antonio Vivaldi's "Gloria," carols of the season, and several other seasonal favorites, including "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas."

Tickets are $8 per person. They can be purchased through the SVSU Box Office at (989) 964-4261.

University named 'outstanding affiliate' for peer education efforts

SVSU has been honored for its programs to help students make healthy decisions through peer education activities. SVSU received one of two Outstanding Network Affiliate awards for medium-sized (5,000 to 12,000 enrollment) schools from The BACCHUS Network, a leading national peer education association.

Nine SVSU students gathered with some 800 fellow peer educators from around the country to share best practices for health and wellness education during The BACCHUS Network General Assembly in Anaheim, California Nov. 9-11. SVSU was recognized for its exceptional peer education efforts throughout the preceding year. The award includes a plaque and a $300 cash prize.

Jazz ensemble gives concert

The SVSU Jazz Ensemble will perform in concert Thursday, Dec. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Rhea Miller Recital Hall. Under the direction of SVSU jazz artist-in-residence Jeff W. Hall, the group will perform selections from composers such as Duke Ellington and Rodgers and Hammerstein, as well as a version of "Silent Night."

Guest artist Bruce Parker on drums will join the SVSU student musicians. He has performed with The Four Tops and the Opryland Big Band, as well as a jazz trio on the television show "Love Boat."

'Twas the fight before Christmas Toughman at Dow

Kicking off the weekend on Friday, Dec. 15, Toughman enters a cage as Toughman Mixed Martial Arts Cage Combat. Currently, MMA fighting is the hottest thing on cable and pay-per-view television. Now see it live, at the Dow Event Center. The best extreme fighters from around the Midwest will battle in action-packed cage fights.

The Budweiser Toughman Extreme Fight Weekend will begin at 8:00 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15 and Saturday, Dec. 16 at the Dow Event Center.

Tickets are on sale now at the Dow Event Center Box Office, online at ticketmaster.com and by phone at (989) 754-4800. Advance tickets as low as $15 are on sale now. Tickets will be on sale for $20 on the days of the show.
