Day of the Dead celebration to be held Wednesday

The Day of the Dead, or el Dia de los Muertos, will take place Wednesday, Nov. 1 at 5 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room.

The Day of the Dead is a national holiday in Mexico and an ancient Aztec celebration of the memory of deceased ancestors.

The souls of the departed are celebrated for returning home to the world of the living. People do not cry during the celebration because the elders say that the path back to the living world must not be made slippery by tears.

Rhodes Scholar to speak on role of religious youth

Dr. Eboo Patel, the founder and executive director of the Interfaith Youth Core, will be lecturing on the subject of "The Role of Religious Youth in the 21st Century" Wednesday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. in the Rhea Miller Recital Hall.

Patel is a Rhodes Scholar who has been named "one of the thirty social visionaries under 30 challenging the world" by Utne Magazine. He currently teaches at the Chicago Theological Seminary and was the keynote speaker at the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Forum.

Communication, dating, respect to be discussed at event

The Student Counseling Center will be sponsoring Mike Domitrz's Can I Kiss You? on Thursday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. in the Malcolm Field Theatre.

The event is expected to be, "A hilarious program that teaches individuals how to ask for what they want sexually or intimately - without having to play any of the games." The first 200 participants will receive a free t-shirt.

Ping Pong Tournament

There will be a ping pong tournament Monday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. in the Student Center. There will be an admission charge of $3. Contact tmbaker@svsu.edu for more information.

Third annual Leadership Blitz

Motivational speaker Nancy Hunter Denney will be giving an address entitled "Building a Community of Leaders" as part of a conference, which will take place Friday, Nov. 3 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Griswald Lecture Hall of Northwood University.

Those who attend should enjoy a day of speakers, programs, discussion tables, lunch, and a free gift. Topics discussed will be: community service, Greek life, career building, leadership skills, public speaking, program concepts, diversity, and a presentation by peer educators. The deadline for registration is today in the Student Life Center.

Young, award-winning harpist to give concert

Julie Ann Smith will perform in concert Saturday, Nov. 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Rhea Miller Recital Hall as part of the Rhea Miller Concert Series.

Smith has gained international recognition for her charismatic performing style and diverse repertoire. A silver medalist in the 2004 USA International Harp Competition and bronze medalist in 2001, she made her National Symphony Orchestra debut in 2003 with conductor Marvin Hamlisch and has been honored in several competitions throughout the country.

Cardinal Idol

All singing talents will be welcome to participate in Cardinal Idol in the Cardinal Cage on Wednesday, Nov. 1 at 8 p.m.

Solo and group acts can sign up in the Student Life Center.

Bring cash and change to vote. Prizes will be awarded to winner.
